The new modern art space which by itself is a work of art, is designed by Jorge Eduardo Neira Serkel, a self-taught architect and Santiago Rumney Guggenheim, who is the great grand son of the famous collector and patron Peggy Guggenheim and the director of the Gallery. Yucatan Peninsula near Tulum in Mexico, is an important tourist spot famous for its sandy beaches and the Mayan relics which has sea and jungle facing residences. It is a paradise for the nature lovers and artist. The modern art gallery, IK LAB is the prototype of Yucatan peninsula's heritage and scenic beauty bringing an inspiration beyond explanation. The curved walls characterised in the art gallery remains a challenge for a curator who is used to the normal walls of the traditional gallery.
The Gallery is covered by a welcoming ‘shell’ made up of curved walls covered by plants, with smooth concrete parts and a slanting, irregular floor. The entrance has glass and wood doors through which the visitors pass through to get inside the 4 meters high gallery. The gallery brings in the warmth of natural environment and the visitor walks with a barefoot to experience it. The rough surfaces of inga wood, smooth concrete with coolness and a climbing plant which is natures touch is all part of the gallery. The glimpses of sky and jungle is viewed through the circular opening of different sizes placed in various heights. This modern art Gallery acts as a bridge between the cultural heritage of local community with International artists.
